Remarks: We brought out-of-town guests from NYC to this place and it was a fine choice. In a nutshell it had much better than average Chinese food in a classy environment. The service was somewhat spotty, but overall it was a pleasing experience. Also the place very much suits my wife's tastes (who is a big fan).
Food: This was the best part of the experience. There were 7 of us and we ordered the following family style: Steak Kew, New Chicken, Oven Roasted Duck, Szechuan String Beans, Pork Lo Mein, Moo Shu Pork, and another couple of dishes from the traditional favorites.
Ordering from the 'China Gourmet Classics' section of the menu was worth it! A little pricier, but these dishes were much better quality and more special than a typical Chinese restaurant. For me, the Steak Kew was the best dish. It was ordered medium rare and the steak was excellent. The New Chicken was crunchy. Another exceptional part of the food was the sauces. The sauces were so good that once the meat from the dishes was gone, we ate the remaining sauce with rice just to keep it from going to waste. The waitress recommended the Szechuan String Beans and they were quite tasty and a well-considered compliment to the beef-centric meal we ordered.
The only standard item we got was Pork Lo Mein. It was fine but did not distinguish itself as much as the other dishes. I reiterate my recommendation to order from the 'China Gourmet Classics' menu.
Service: This was spotty.
Pros - This was a really busy day (day before Christmas Eve) when it was hard to get a reservation anywhere. The staff was able to change my reservation and we came a half hour later than we said, but it was no problem. Also the manager/owner, Tenley Moy came by our table told some jokes, gave us personal attention and made the experience a lot of fun.
Cons - The service was slow. We had to wait a long time to order and to get drinks and to pay. The whole meal took over 2 hours. I think the restaurant was much busier than they expected and did their best to make up for it, but 2 hours is a LONG time for a meal.
Ambiance: Classier than a typical Chinese restaurant. Linens and cozy, subdued atmosphere. I did not have wine, but they have an extensive wine list.
Price: Probably fair, but not cheap. Entrees ranged from about $16 dollars to $22 dollars. Like I said, spend the extra money for their specialty dishes. The side dish (green beans) was very well executed, but cost about $9 per order. Anyhow this place is probably a good value considering the neighborhood.

I can't remember what this was, sorry :-( |
Steak Kew with some amazing sauce. Like I mention, we ate all the sauce with white rice even after the steak was gone. |
